Romania. For most of the world, the name usually conjures up images of Dracula and Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci—and not much else. Yet this country with a rich history stretching back thousands of years contains countless wonders and hidden gems, and has produced many people who’ve made a major impact on the world.
We wrote The Little Book of Romanian Wisdom to share some of the wisdom, insights and life principles—common to profound—of the proud people of Romania, both the world famous and everyday citizens. Much of this wisdom has remained hidden behind the barrier of a language spoken by only about 25 million people in the world. It was created to be both an introduction and an invitation to go deeper into the wisdom and soul of a country, and in the process, awaken the wisdom of the heritage within each of us.
Our selections are from over 100 people, all of whom were born in Romania. They include Hollywood legends Edward G. Robinson, John Houseman, Bela Lugosi, the original Tarzan (and Olympic gold medal swimmer) Johnny Weissmuller; Nobel Peace Prize-winning author Elie Wiesel and Olympic gold medal gymnast Nadia Comaneci; to the lesser-known outside the country, such as poet Mihai Eminescu, who’s fame it’s said would have rivaled Shakespeare, had Eminescu written in English; to everyday people in Romania—students, parents, working people and so on.
The Little Book of Romanian Wisdom was written to shine a light on the hidden wisdom and heritage of one country, in this case Romania. As we are all ultimately from the same family, it could just as easily apply to you, Romanian or not. It was created to enlighten and inspire the best in us, whatever our country of origin. As Thomas Paine, one of America’s founding patriots said,
My country is the world and my religion is to do good.
We hope you enjoy this collection of Romanian wisdom quotes as much as we enjoyed assembling it.
